REGIONAL LEADERS VISIT ATLANTA FOR 2ND GREATER PHILADELPHIA LEADERSHIP EXCHANGE

 

104 Participants – Mayor Nutter Among Them – To Build Knowledge Base and Connections (September 18, 2008 – Philadelphia)  

 

What can Greater Philadelphia’s most dynamic business, government, philanthropic, and non‐profit leaders learn from their counterparts in Metro Atlanta? A lot, according to the Economy League of Greater Philadelphia, organizer of the Greater Philadelphia Leadership Exchange. From September 24 to 26, 2008, a diverse group of 104 leaders will learn how Metro Atlanta meets its challenges, employs best practices, and achieves success. The Atlanta visit is the culmination of a multi‐part program that included a June case‐study exercise in Norristown about the economic and workforce development complexities that communities face.  

 

The Greater Philadelphia Leadership Exchange goal is to develop executives of business, civic, and government organizations into regional visionaries dedicated to making Greater Philadelphia a world class region.

 

Continuing to build a strong cohort of innovative, broad‐minded, and energetic leaders of the Greater Philadelphia region is equally important to learning from the destination, says Steven T. Wray, Economy League Executive Director.

Mayor Nutter, elected officials from both Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and the top of region’s corporate and nonprofit sectors are going to come back with new relationships, perspectives, and ideas to benefit their constituents, companies, and communities.”

 

Major metropolitan regions throughout the country—including Boston, San Francisco, Denver, Chicago, and Atlanta—have benefited for many years from annual leadership exchanges. This second Greater Philadelphia Leadership Exchange travels to Atlanta because of its long‐standing and innovative public/private partnerships and its strength in leveraging its regional assets to stimulate growth.   In particular, participants will hear from leaders in transportation, higher education, economic development, global connectivity, and sustainability.

 

In September 2005, the Economy League led a delegation of 72 to Chicago. They learned about efforts ranging from the Metropolitan Mayor’s Caucus to Millennium Park. Participants returned with a new understanding of what can be achieved in Greater Philadelphia with visionary leadership, knowledge of the tactics being used by other regions, and commitment to turning these lessons into action with measurable outcomes.  Connections fostered through the Leadership Exchange led to such outcomes as regional collaboration for the 2016 Olympics Bid, advocating and gaining dedicated funding for SEPTA, and creating a partnership to grow minority businesses to scale in Greater Philadelphia.

Woodruff Foundation President P. Russell Hardin, Cousins Properties Chairman and CEO Tom Bell, Atlanta Housing Authority CEO Renee Glover, Hartsfield‐Jackson International Airport Assistant General Manager Arnaldo Ruiz, Atlanta Beltline Initiative President and CEO Terri Montague, Atlanta Business Chronicle Publisher Ed Baker, and  United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta President and CEO Milton James Little, Jr.  

 

Ray C. Anderson, Founder and Chairman of Interface, Inc., will give the keynote address.   Interface is the world's largest producer of commercial floor coverings. In 1994, Anderson was asked to outline the multinational company's environmental vision. It didn’t have one, and that set Anderson on a mission to reduce to zero Interface’s negative environmental impact by 2020 through the redesign of processes and products, pioneering of new technologies, and elimination of waste and emissions while increasing the use of renewable materials and energy sources.  Last year, Anderson received the Purpose Prize from Civic Ventures for leading the business community in adopting practices that protect the environment yet also increase profit.
