The Economy League of Greater Philadelphia celebrates 100 years fighting to create what they call a world class region.

Listen:

For the past century - The Economy League of Greater Philadelphia has focused on improving government, reducing taxes and enhancing economic conditions in the region.

But since it was first launched as the Bureau of Municipal Research in 1909 - the organization's main priorities have shifted. Executive Director Steve Wray explains.

Wray: Our original mission really focused on what I would call the economy of government, trying to keep government small very focused in on governmental work. Now, we focus more in on the region and the regional economy and government plays a part in that but it's not the only part.

The Economy League was instrumental in creating the web-based Philadelphia budget simulation game as well as the Greater Philadelphia Leadership Exchange - which works to develop leadership skills among businesses and government.

Wray says the organization's next 100 years will be focused on creating a more competitive environment for investment and job opportunities.
