BEYOND ENTRY LEVEL JOBS: How Career Pathways Can Reduce Poverty and Increase Economic Growth

A skilled workforce is central to ensuring long-term growth and opportunity in our region. However, for a large number of Greater Philadelphia’s residents, many jobs in our increasingly high-skilled economy remain out of reach. At the same time, regional employers cite chronic difficulties in finding quality employees for the kinds of mid-level jobs that can provide a bridge to the middle class.


In response, employers and education and training providers have been pursuing new strategies to better align providers' offerings and employers’ needs, while making career progressions transparent to workers themselves. These “career pathways” approaches hold the potential to help individuals progress from low-paying, entry-level jobs into family-sustaining careers and help employers address critical talent gaps.


The Economy League, the Job Opportunity Investment Network (JOIN), the Philadelphia Society of Human Resources Management (Philly SHRM), and United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey hosted a World Class Council forum focused on how Greater Philadelphia’s leading employers, nonprofits, and policymakers are implementing these coordinated career pathways approaches.
